this is not a revolution
Josh Eppard Guitar
Initials reminded me of an era that's near and dear to my heart.  The songs performed at Bam Margera's bar were drenched in emotion, but much more mature and intricate than what's presently perceived as "emo."  It was Josh Eppard's first show with the band, playing with so much energy I thought he was going to pass out before the set was finished!  His drumming wasn't like in 3, Coheed and Cambria, Counterfeit Disaster, Eppard Brothers, Mours or even Weerd Science.  It sounded like a whole different animal, yet still had the familiar feel of Josh Eppard.  Fred Mascherino announced from the stage that they were to fly down to Alabama today to record their album which will apparently come out on a major label in Summer 2010.  I absolutely cannot wait to hear the recordings after that moving performance!  In this article I read that Fred and Andy Jackson have been referring to their sound as, "American Rock Revival Music."  Allegedly the forthcoming record will be a concept album about a couple experiencing a "turbulent time" inspired by the fires in Fred's hometown (Coatesville, Pennsylvania) last year.  Deeply intriguing!  The next tour dates I could find seem to be the mid-west leg of Warped Tour.

To quote Josh Eppard,
“no matter what project I’m committed to, Weerd Science is always at the forefront of my creative mind.”
Josh will be back home this weekend for his hometown show.  It's been 5 years since he's played his material in Kingston, New York.  That last show was entirely last minute ("booked" a mere hours before doors) at The Forum on 744 Broadway and completely packed in.  This show will have no openers and will be at the same spot (note: it has a new name- The Basement).  I'll be selling merch and spinning the entire "Sick Kids" record at the end of the set for the crowd to preview while hobnobbing with each other and Weerd Science.  Also, I'm going to run a live stream before doors open- from my laptop where anyone anywhere can tune in and chat with Mr. Eppard.  I can't promise a solid time since we'll be running around trying to get everything in order...  but it should be some time between 7pm EST and 8:30.  I'll update the status of it on my facebook and twitter.  We'll be going live on, so I hope to see you there!

In more Josh Eppard news...  The E-Males have also been in the studio (that Josh Eppard is one busy bee!).  E-Males = Eppard Brothers plus half of what made them- their father, Jimmy Eppard.  I can't share any more about that though!  We'll see what happens with that...

today's advice
Don't let yourself get sucked into the realm of possibilities when embarking on a new project.  Stay on the ground and complete each task one at a time.

This free digital sampler was compiled to give a glimpse into the diverse musicality that dwells in Hudson Valley, NY. New York is a vast state… there’s so much more to it than just the city. Here’s a bit that goes on from Westchester to Albany. Many many thanks to the musicians for taking part in this project and keeping the music alive!

Being a resident of the Hudson Valley my entire life (I’ve lived in Rockland, Westchester, and Ulster), I’ve always been interested in the thriving music scene (though before I discovered its existence I tinkered deeply in what was going on in New Jersey and on Long Island). The Hudson Valley has most famously birthed The Band, Steely Dan, Soulive, Shabutie / Coheed and Cambria, The Getaway / Matchbook Romance, 3, Jerk Magnet / Anadivine, Cooter / AutoPilot Off, Saul Williams, Jeff Klein, Hayden Panettiere, Pete Seeger, Jay Beckenstein, Chris Caffery, Gia Farrell, Matt Flynn and of course- the Woodstock Music Festival. The talent is strong here. Must be in the historically rich soil or something… because it’s ridiculous!

The idea for this sampler was inspired by the combination of the 10 year anniversary of Error 404 - Not Found compilation and the release of the “So Much For Us” book. Both archive the underground rock scene of Kingston/Woodstock in the late 90’s leading me to believe that I’m not alone in or crazy for feeling such passion toward the music to emerge from this area. Most of these songs are unmastered. Some are rough mixes. Some are personal/basement recordings. One is live.

if you don't support your local scene, who will?

***Apologies to the artists who did not make the compilation this time around. The feedback was so great, I could not fit everything that I received! I will most definitely be doing this again in the near future so if you’re still interested in inclusion shoot me an email missneesh [at]

Eppard Brothers (Dan Root)
Such an exciting week! I can't wait for tomorrow! 3's going to premiere their music video for "Rabid Animals" at 10PM EST on and chat kinda like they did when filming the video back in October. It was the coolest thing ever, sitting comfortable on my couch, watching them film the video live and take suggestions from my fellow fans... I'm so fucking stoked to see the final product!

Friday and Saturday are gonna be beyond dope too. Friday 3 will be celebrating the release of Revisions at the always classy Bearsville Theater in Woodstock, NY. Those shows are always the best. The band plays forever and is just totally in their element. Definitive hometown show for sure. This one will certainly be one to remember though, since Weerd Science is sharing the stage, for the first time EVER! Obviously Joey and Josh have performed together before... as 3. As the Eppard Brothers. 3 opened for Coheed and Cambria on tour while Josh was still their drummer. But this is the very first time Josh will be bearing his heart and soul on the same stage that Joey will do the same. I'm beyond ecstatic for this. Then Saturday is like the afterparty. The Eppard Extravaganza at The Basement in Kingston. Josh will be performing Weerd Science material. Joey will be performing his solo material. The two of them will also be performing as Eppard Brothers. Their dad, Jimmy Eppard, will join in (E-Males)... and their uncle, John The Baker (JEppardy). Soo fucking stoked for the big family reunion. Uncle John moved to California and has been rockin' with his band, Instant Asshole. He's comin' back for the Woodstock show, and this show- which is also the 15 year anniversary reunion of his band - Slimy Penis Breath... which had material concerning his arrest in Woodstock in 1994 for cursing in public during an acoustic performance. He sued the Popo for violating his first amendment rights... won, and also helped initiate a private investigation which blew the lid off that cop as well as several others fucking little girls. Man, it's gonna be a blast!

I hope this song starts a craze
reflecting on my bittersweet evening last night.

I got to hang out with 3 of my best buds in the world, though separately. Road tripped from Albany to Long Island. Missed the big huge arena show we'd been looking forward to... then ended up meeting Fred Mascherino, Andy Jackson, Steve Lucarelli, Dustin Kensrue, Teppei Teranishi and spotted Justin Beck before we left to cry about how retarded we are. I mean honestly, who the fuck fucks up a chance to see Vinnie Caruana, Andy Jackson, Thrice, glassJAw, AND Brand New all in one fucking night? Well I take some solace in that I didn't have to brave the nosebleed seats we had tickets for and just feel awful about not being able to see anything (as if my 5'0" stature ever allows me to see anything). Plus I got to hear a bit of Brand New and got to feel a bit of the intense excitement inside my soul that one gets only when seeing one of their all-time favorite bands live (even if they're not crazy about the band's latest release). I remembered that I don't like stadium shows. I hate seats. What the fuck is that shit? I mean really. There's no way I could've just sat down and watched Glassjaw. No fucking way in hell! Plus when I saw Ricky Martin there a decade ago, I couldn't see a god damn thing when I stood up! So I'm gonna say things worked out. I'm gonna say I'll have a better chance to see all of those acts again in the future... though it's like playing with fire with glassJAw... you never know if sickness will strike. I like hole-in-the-wall clubs. I also like nicer clubs, but I don't like arenas. Fuck that shit. Fuck it right in the asshole

Initials, The Movielife (reunion), Thrice, Glassjaw, Brand New... anyone? yes? no? Okay, I missed my chance.

Holiday Concert Itinerary
I'm pretty damn thankful for music to pull me though, distract me, motivate me, accompany me through all the ups and downs I face. True a good portion of those are a result of my love of music... but hey. To each his own. Throughout my life I've most looked forward to the live experiences. That's one thing that has certainly not changed... though I may have helped put the show together in some form or another. These next few weeks are what it's all about.

3 - "Anyone Human" - Revisions (October 27th, 2009)

Romanticism of the music industry just isn't there. The pipe-dream doesn't happen. One doesn't get signed, instantly get played on the radio and live happily ever after. It's just not like that. If you do not start with a shit-ton of money, you've gotta work your fucking ass off to have the ability to finish your record- let alone tour and be heard. There's no perfect guidebook. It's all trial and error. Ups and downs. More downs than ups. Hell, chances are- if you don't already have an impressive career preceding you, you will not have a chance to gain the backing of a label. You've gotta prove you'd increase their resources, money. Furthermore, most radio stations are owned by one of two companies. As much as the jockeys talk about playing requests, they cannot unless the specific song is on their playlist, which by the way, is generated by the owning company. Unfortunately it takes much more than talent to achieve success. Music is an occupation of time, love and persistency. And adversity, stemming from the core. Loved ones lose respect for those who live hand to mouth. Why struggle when you have the ability to eat, shit and sleep comfortably? Why follow your heart when it only brings heartache? Why be miserable with ever-so-slight glimmers of personal and creative vindication when you can earn a steady paycheck? It's not so black and white. Just as your life isn't a constant party, theirs isn't. It's not easy to split focus to balance human relationships, a day job, and be inspired/write/bring to life- magic. No one's life is easy. Pull your own weight. They're trying to carry their own.

If you’re an artist…  rock the fuck on and never stop!
